Red Oak is a light to medium brown color with reddish undertones. It’s coarse texture and large pores add a distinctive look to your various interior projects. It is straight-grained and machines well. It can be stained or polished to an excellent finish. These boards are surfaced-two-sides with square edges. Outstanding Product and Customer Support

My grandson wanted a shelf to display his treasures on and has always liked the Walnut Floating shelf’s displaying some of Grandpa’s treasures. He wanted a lighter color and the Red Oak would match his bedroom furniture. I am a repeat customer with Forest 2 Home and continue to be impressed with all the wood products I have received. I have made them my go-to for all my hard wood needs when I want the best possible product (and they carry the species needed). The wood I have received is really a high end (furniture grade) product and by far much better then the home stores in the local areas. I have purchased one of each of the five species of 1x2x24” kits for some future products and looking forward file that delivery. The wood is as close to true dimension as I have ever purchased in my life and yes I have purchased a lot. The Customer Service is one of the best I have dealt with. Willing to go the extra mile to make special orders work smoothly. Go ahead and purchase from Forest 2 Home...You wont be disappointed! Kind Regards...Michael Eubank...satisfied customer!

Red Oak

Excellent product and service. Beautiful oak and very well surfaces. Only a little final sanding needed. Will buy from Forest 2 Home again.

Premium Quality

Our premium hardwood is 100% clear grade on one side. You can expect no wane, rot, splits, cracks, checks, chipouts or pith.

Kiln Dried

Kiln drying allows us to control the air flow, temperature and humidity so that the hardwood dries 6%-8% uniformly and can be finished to a smooth surface.

All lumber starts off rough. We surface two sides to a smooth surface so it’s easier and quicker for you to start on your project.

Red Oak

American Red Oak only naturally grows in North America. They grow mostly throughout eastern hardwood forests. Red Oak can grow higher or lower in altitude, giving them different characteristics based on location.

⚠️ WARNING: Drilling, sawing, sanding or machining wood products can expose you to wood dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer.  Avoid inhaling wood dust or use a dust mask or other safeguards for personal protection.  For more information go to

At Forest 2 Home, our lumber is S2S (surfaced 2 sides), unless otherwise noted, and is commonly referred to as hit or miss. Hit or miss markings are not defects and are totally normal in the planing process.

Generally, you can clean hit or miss up beautifully at 13/16" or to your preferred thickness at home, which is what we mean by "Our hardwood isn’t a finished thickness (hit or miss) and may still require you to flatten, plane, shape or sand your boards to fit your project."

Have any questions about hit or miss? Email us and a Forest 2 Home team member would be happy to help.

Right below our Premium grade is our new Character grade, which can include knots between 1/4" and 2", bark, and wane. You can still expect no splits. We have Character grade boards in several sizes and species. This grade is perfect for unique statement pieces. Shoot us an email at to learn more, see photos, and place a custom order.

A board foot is a unit of measurement for lumber. A board foot is calculated by taking the length (in feet) x width (in inches) divided by 12 x thickness (in inches).

S2S stands for surfaced 2 sides.  It may still require you to flatten, plane, shape or sand your project parts to fit your project.

Opposite of heartwood, sapwood is the living part of the wood, commonly found near the outside of the log and has a white coloration.

Heartwood extends from the pith to the sapwood. The cells of this part of the wood no longer participate in the life processes of the tree which cause it to have a brown coloration.

Wane is the bark or lack of wood on the edges and corners of lumber. Our team ensures no wane by running our lumber through a planer to create square edges on all sides.

Pith is located at the very center of a tree and composed of soft, spongy cells. It has a greater tendency to crack and is unstable. All of our wood is thoroughly inspected to make sure no final board contains pith, leaving you with a durable hardwood board.

Yes, we shrink wrap the boards together to eliminate any boards shifting during transit. We also use edge protectors to protect the corners and edges of your hardwood against any damage.

Our grain guide has information about each species and also has a grain picture to help you identify each hardwood species.
