Each premium hardwood chess board kit contains the boards needed to make your own DIY chess board at home. The kiln dried hardwood boards in each kit are surfaced-2-sides and have square edges. Pre-cut hardwood boards in this chess board kit make it easy for you to follow our finished design or allow you to add your own spin by creating a custom pattern for your DIY chess board. All you need to do is line up your desired pattern, grab your favorite tools and wood glue, and make a handmade wooden chess board. Curly Maple is prized for its unique figuring that shows through its wavy and "curly" grain pattern. Curly Maple comes from Red Maple (Soft Maple) lumber. You can expect at least 60% of the board to contain the curly figured pattern. The curly maple figuring is a horizontal pattern that is perpendicular to the wood grain. Once you apply a finish, the Curly Maple boards will come alive! These hardwood boards are Prime grade, which is our highest grade and are pre-surfaced (hit or miss) to 15/16”. Expect boards to contain small standard defects like pin knots, small splits and wane.

A member of the Walnut family, Butternut, is often referred to as “White Walnut,” because of its light tan to cinnamon-colored heartwood. With a cathedral like grain pattern, our Butternut is full of character and can make your project stand out from the crowd. Boxes are packed with two boards that are surfaced-2-sides and come 1 inch (actual 15/16") thick and range from 8 to 12 inches in width.
