Why FSC Certification Matters

Why FSC Certification Matters

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, which is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting forestland on a global scale for the world now and for generations to come. They grant certifications to companies that adhere to strict forestry management standards that better the environment, the local community, and more.

To be certified, forests and forestry managers must meet 10 principals and 57 criterion, which includes, but is not limited to:

  • Maintaining or enhancing the long-term social and economic well being of forest workers and local communities
  • Conserving biological diversity and its values, water resources, soils, and unique and fragile ecosystems and landscapes
  • Monitoring and assessing the condition of the forest, yields of forest products, chain of custody, management activities and their social and environmental impact

You might recall seeing a tree logo on various brands and products at the supermarket. This symbol shows that a company has been evaluated and approved by the FSC. You can see this logo on our site.

Each time you buy an FSC certified product, you are doing your part to help protect the forests that 1.6 billion people rely on for livelihoods, such as food, clothing, or shelter.

FSC certified landowners and forestry managers contribute to our overall health by giving forests the opportunity to filter the water we drink as well as the air we breathe. This can be done by simply following 15-30-year harvesting cycles, which leads to carbon sequestering (learn more about carbon sequestering here).

Buy FSC to say thank you to the responsible landowners and foresters who are working to make sure forests will be around for generations to come.
